The boat is a phantom powerboat with a two litre mercury racing engine designed to race in A class offshore circuit races.

The hull is a standard eighteen foot phantom hull designed specifically for racing. The interior has been prepared by the black magic team to be as strong and as light as possible. The aim is to produce a strong and reliable boat capable of taking the punishment of offshore racing. The driver and navigator are held in by a pair of bucket seats. There are no restraints in the boat so in the event of a crash the occupants are not trapped. In the nose of the boat is a tank that can be filled with water and emptied during racing to keep the boat level in rough weather. Between the bow tank and the crew sits a series of air bags that keeps the nose of the boat above the water in the event of an accident so the boat doesn’t sink. At the rear of the boat is a dry cell battery, stainless steel fuel tank, fire extinguisher and lock box.

The engine is a mercury 200 bhp racing engine. This means that it designed to rev higher and produce more power at the prop than a standard leisure engine. The engines a two litre V6 two stroke lightweight block. It has electronic ignition and is fed via three twin carbs. The power is fed to the prop threw a short shaft to keep the prop high in the water and a two to one gear box.

The driver operates the steering controls using a lightweight steering system and throttle through a foot pedal to enable him to keep both hands on the wheel.

The navigator keeps an eye on the position of all the other boats in the area and so talks the driver through the corners avoiding any collisions. He also looks after the other controls including GPS, compass and bow tank.

The complete boat is a powerful package, been capable of speeds up to 76mph and yet strong and agile enough to cope with rough weather racing.
